Claire Gladwin

HR Management, Newcastle upon Tyne

I am currently working as an HR advisor for a large acute teaching hospital. There are around 5000 staff and I provide HR support to managers and advice to staff on a daily basis. I also spend a lot of time helping to develop policies and procedures and other smaller projects, such as a new starter handbook.

Monday

Equality & Diversity Patient Sub-Group meeting lasted an hour and a half and was attended by representatives from different staff groups, including the director of nursing, patient and public liaison officer, head of outpatients, modern matrons.

Tuesday

I met with another advisor to hand over a work process. She had to run me through the process and ensure that I knew where to find all the information. I then spent the rest of the day incorporating comments into the uniform policy for it to be approved by the Joint Staffside Consultative Committee followed by Operations Board and then Hospital Management Board.

Wednesday

I travelled to our District General Hospital in Rugby to take minutes in a disciplinary hearing, regarding a case of alleged misconduct. It was useful to observe how my HR colleague presented the management case, as I will be expected to do so in future.

Thursday

I attended the weekly HR managers meeting which usually lasts for one and a half to two hours and is attended by all HR managers, associate directors of HR and the director. I then compiled the specialty performance reports for the specialty performance review meeting, by pulling together information from a number of different sources on sickness, maternity, disciplinary and bank usage. Following that I observed a colleague's equality and diversity training with a view to delivering it myself in the future and then spent the rest of the afternoon chasing up attendance requests to members of the Domestic Violence Policy Subgroup.

Friday

I wrote a letter to an employee regarding final pay, filled in a colleague's 360° feedback, started writing a draft policy and then attended the divisional quarterly review.
